The San Luis Obispo firm Vellum Design Build and Cal Poly’s College of Architecture and Environmental Design partnered to host the 21st annual Vellum Furniture Design Exhibition, a juried competition among college students. The event will exhibit hundreds of pieces.
“This competition provides a forum for students to expeditiously exhibit their design passions with alacrity and with a craft facility,” said co-organizer Tom di Santo, a Cal Poly architecture professor. “It is amazing to see so many brilliant examples of ‘Learn by Doing’ that the students achieve in such a short period.”
The student or team of students who design the top project will receive The Space Architects’ Milano Grand Prize and get tickets to Milan, Italy, in April for the Salone International del Mobile. It’s the world’s largest trade fair, annually showcasing the latest furniture and design from around the globe.
Overall, Vellum is a signature event for CAED’s Architecture Department that showcases several core aspects of our education: design conceptualization (sketching and concept models), learning experience design through building in our support shop (testing, prototyping and final product), and community celebration (competition and exhibition).
