Cal Poly’s Jazz Ensemble and Vocal Jazz Ensemble presents a season finale that celebrates the digital release of the Vocal Jazz Ensemble’s new single, “Sunlight”. This Esperanza Spalding tune has been arranged by Arthur White, Cal Poly Director of Jazz Studies. Vocal music major Danna Dumandan, Grammy award-winning drummer Gregg Bissonette, as well as New York Voices members Kim Nazarian and Darmon Meador are featured on this release. Arthur White also plays on the single. "Sunlight" will be available from streaming music services the week of May 23. The full album is scheduled to be released in the fall.
The concert will include the premiere of original compositions by Jazz Ensemble members Bryce Yuen and Wyatt Willard. Yuen, a first-year materials engineering major, composed “Stay at Home,” and Willard, a second-year music major, composed “Big Fish.” The big band will also feature fourth-year music major and vocalist Mady Frei.
The program includes music by Bob Mintzer, Stephen Sondheim, John Clayton, Charles Mingus and others.
