After spending a year offline—no internet, email, texting, etc.—singer-songwriter Gabriel Kahane has created a personal and impassioned exploration of how we can strive to see ourselves in each other, to renew trust and empathy, and to build coalitions sufficiently powerful to make a more just society and healthier planet, at a time when digital spaces conspire to tear us apart.
Utilizing the tools of piano, vocals and guitar, Kahane explores themes of marriage, fatherhood, loss and the intersectionality of crisis in this performance titled Magnificent Bird.
“Kahane’s work...is, first and foremost, an exercise in lyric beauty. He sings in a warm, resonant, melancholic baritone, which coasts upward into a plaintive falsetto. He plays the piano with a poetic touch...and his music is suffused with idiosyncratic, enriched tonal harmony...he is one of the finest, most searching songwriters of the day.”
